Dr. James J. Bulot
PhD in Gerontology

Dr. James Bulot, a 2004 graduate of the UMB Gerontology program, was recently appointed Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs by Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana. Before this appointment, Dr. Bulot was an Associate Professor of Gerontology and head of the Department of Gerontology, Sociology, and Political Science; he was also the Endowed Professor of Gerontology at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

A ULM faculty member since 2002, Dr. Bulot has been instrumental in developing the first online gerontology degree offered in Louisiana and steered the ULM Gerontology Program to be the first nationally accredited gerontology graduate program in the United States in Long-Term Care Administration. He is also known for teaching one of the only academic courses in elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation in the nation. Since returning to Louisiana, he has served as the Secretary of the Region 8 Healthcare Redesign Consortium, hosted numerous healthcare forums in North Louisiana and across the state, written model legislation on health and long-term care, and participated in the creation of the North Delta Human Services District. In 2006, he was certified by the Iberia Parish Sheriffs Office, regional skills training academy, as an elderly service officer.

Dr. Bulot has also served as a State Board Member for the Louisiana Alzheimer's Association; on the Alzheimer's Association Public Policy Board; as Vice-Chairman of the NELA Senior Olympics; as Executive Board Member of Communities Acting to Benefit Louisiana's Elderly; on the AARP Steering Committee for Long-Term Care Redesign; and as an Advisory Member of Elder Protective Services. In 2005, he was selected as an alternate member of the 2006 White House Conference on Aging. Dr. Bulot has published numerous articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals, as well as authoring articles for regional newspapers on gerontological issues. He has presented more than 25 research projects, papers, or posters at national scientific conferences and has given nine invited presentations, lectures, or interviews. He is married to Lisa Potter Bulot, MS, LDN, RD, and has two children, Tyler Kenneth (4) and Allison Marilyn (2).
