Michael McPhee, an alumnus UMass Boston, Class of 2001, has helped develop grant proposals in the areas of famine, community radio, e-government, civic dialogue, and teacher training. At McCormack he has served as a liaison and guide for many international visitors, organizing seminars, coordinating receptions, moderating meetings, and leading field trips as well as historic walking tours of Boston. His interest in international democracy and development arose from a two year tour of duty with the U. S. Navy, including service as a security policeman in Asmara, Eritrea. He is currently working on proposed partnerships for UMass Boston with the Academy of Economic Sciences in Chisinau, Moldova and with the University of Asmara in Eritrea. At UMASS Boston, he is also involved with the Urban Mission Committee; he has developed a newsletter for "Give Us Your Poor" a film project being developed by McCormack's Center for Social Policy to raise awareness of the homeless; he has co-organized a PBS televised National Issues Forum that utilized civic dialogue on racial and ethnic tensions; and he has been involved with the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy as a volunteer at such events as the Massachusetts Gubernatorial Debate on Issues of Concern to Women.
