PhD Admissions - Doctoral Study in Gerontology
Admission Requirements
PhD admissions for doctoral study in Gerontology at UMass Boston are highly competitive; approximately six to eight full-time students will be enrolled each year, in addition to a limited number of part-time students.
Requirements for PhD Admissions include:
- a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution;
- an undergraduate grade point average of 3.00 (or equivalent) or better;
- general GRE scores (verbal and quantitative);
- transcripts of all prior academic work;
- three letters of recommendation; and
- a personal statement.
Applicants in mid-career should also submit a resume and at least one letter of recommendation from an employer among the required three. Women and members of minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply. The PhD admissions committee may wish to interview finalists.
PhD Admissions Deadlines and Decisions Dates
- Priority is given to those who submit applications and all supporting credentials for PhD admissions by February 1. However, applications received after February 1st will be given full consideration.
- PhD admissions decisions are announced by the first week in April
Transfer Credit Toward Doctoral Study in Gerontology
Graduate courses already completed from a graduate program where a degree was not awarded will be evaluated individually for transfer credit.
- Prior course work must be equivalent to course work offered in the program for transfer credit to be awarded.
- The maximum number of transferable credits is usually six, although more are possible.
- All work up to 12 hours of course work may be waived if the course is equivalent to course work in the program, a grade of B or better was earned and a graduate degree was awarded.
