The social relationships and social development of children with disabilities
Gary N. Siperstein, PhD, is Professor and Director of the Center for Social Development and Education at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Dr. Siperstein has published more than 100 articles, chapters, and books on the social relationships and social development of children with disabilities. His most recent book, Promoting Social Success, focuses on improving the social competence of children in the classroom, utilizing a social-cognitive model.
Dr. Siperstein has been the recipient of numerous research grants from federal agencies, including NICHD and the U.S. Department of Education, and received the prestigious MERIT Award from NICHD for his work on the social aspects of mental retardation. Dr. Siperstein currently serves as the director of the Special Olympics/UMass Boston Global Collaborating Center (GCC), which conducts research and evaluation related to issues of import for Special Olympics and the greater research community. This year, he received the University of Massachusetts’ President’s Lifetime Public Service Award.
Dr. Siperstein has served as associate editor of the American Journal of Mental Retardation and editor of the Research Monograph Series of the AAMR. He presently serves on numerous editorial boards including the Journal of Special Education and Exceptional Children. He is a past member of Massachusetts Governor’s Commission on Mental Retardation, the Massachusetts State Advisory Council for the Department of Mental Retardation (DMR), and the National Academy of Sciences Committee on “Eligibility Determination of Mental Retardation.” Dr. Siperstein also served as the past president of the Division of Research a division of the Council for Exceptional Children.
Four years ago, Dr. Siperstein founded Camp Shriver at UMass Boston, the first fully inclusive sports camp in the Boston area for children with and without disabilities.
