Dalié Jiménez (’06) finished her first year at Boston University Law School—and was accepted as a transfer student to Harvard Law School beginning in September 2007.

Christina Knowles (’07) and Jessica Yazhari (’07) were recently hired as Legislative Aides at the Massachusetts State House, Christina with Rep. Ruth Balser and Jessica with Rep. Mary Rogeness (R). The interviewer seeking a reference for Christina Knowles said, “When we saw she was from the Program, she rose right to the top.”

After completing the Program, Kristen Brouker (’07) became the Statewide Manager of MassNOW; Erin Bradley (’06) got the job as Board Co-President the year before.

Nicole Agusti (’06) was accepted into the Public Policy Ph.D. Program – she’ll start in the fall of 2006.

In 2006, several students published the Op-Ed’s they wrote in the Women in American Politics & Policymaking course; they include: Lisa Allen Brown and Beth Melnikas (’06), “Success Relies on Supply and Demand,” which was published in TheBoston Herald on 1 June 2006; Brandi Tague (’06), “Earth Day comes to Somerville,” which was published in the Somerville Journal on 27 April 2006.

Miryam Wiley, a reporter and graduate of the class of 2006, published wrote a column, “When competence meets compassion,” which was published in the in March 4, 2006, Metrowest Daily News.

The Program co-sponsored “A Conversation with District Attorney Martha Coakley” on 2 March 2006, and the Class of 2006 participated in this event. Martha Coakley was elected the first female Attorney General in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts the following November.

On 21 May, 2005, Amelita Escareal (’05) had an editorial published in the Patriot Ledger: “SPEAK OUT: Massachusetts must embrace international human rights standards.”

In winter 2005, Kathleen Fitzgerald (‘04) received the Excellence in Teaching Award from Daniel Webster College in New Hampshire.

On April 1, 2005, Marie Celestin (’00) received the Eleanor Roosevelt “Unsung Heroine” award presented by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women.

Angela Jolie (‘01) received the Tracy Amalfitano Award from Mayor Menino; for her hard work in the area of public safety and crime watches.

An article called “Women in New England Politics,” by Paige Ransford, Carol Hardy-Fanta, and Anne Marie Cammisa, was published in the spring 2007 issue of the New England Journal of Public Policy.

Carol Hardy-Fanta, Director, was interviewed on WBUR radio on 11/7/06 to discuss gender and race in the state’s recent gubernatorial election.

In May 2006, Associate Program Director, Donna Stewartson, received a Community Service Award from The Honorable Elizabeth Malia, Massachusetts State Representative. Rep. Malia is a graduate of the Program (‘89).

Carol Hardy-Fanta, Director of the Center for Women in Politics & Public Policy, coauthored “The Voting Rights Act and the Election of Nonwhite Officials,” in PS: Political Science & Politics 40(3). She also published “Gender, Race, and Descriptive Representation in the United States: Findings from the Gender and Multicultural Leadership Project,” in the Journal of Women, Politics & Policy. This article appears in a special issue of the Journal of Women, Politics & Policy 28 (3/4), of which she was guest editor. This volume was also released as a book: Intersectionality and Politics: Recent Research on Gender, Race, and Political Representation in the United States (New York: Haworth Press, 2006).

On October 21, 2005, the Program received the “Innovative and Creative Programming Award” from the University Continuing Education Association of New England.

The Program received an award for “Progress in Equity” from the American Association of University Women at its “Speaking out for Justice Award Dinner” on June 26, 2005. Associate Program Director Donna Stewartson traveled to Washington D.C. to receive the award.
