New England Ethnic Newswire
The centerpiece of the project is the New England Ethnic Newswire. The website -- which is mostly in English -- has fresh articles weekly, some picked up from the ethnic media, and other original material. It aggregates stories and materials drawn from dozens ofNew England media outlets that serve ethnic and special-interest communities.
The staff is shown in the photo above. They are (from left) health reporter Eduardo de Oliveira, editor Mary Thang, chief editor Frank Herron and administrator, Lunecee Eligene. The staff holds weekly news meetings at UMass Boston.

April 2009
Newsmaker Forum with Gov. Patrick
Gov. Deval Patrick (fourth from left) met Friday April 24 with about 40 journalists representing ethnic-media outlets that serve readers, listeners and viewers throughout the state. We expect to hold such on-the-record sessions with the governor on a quarterly basis. This one was in Room 157 in the State House in Boston. It's likely that future sessions will be held at the University of Massachusetts Boston campus and other locations around the state. For a summary in Portuguese, go here.

The photo above shows panelists who talked about the role ethnic media play in public-health efforts. Joining him were Jordan Coriza (center) of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and Prof. Eduardo Siguiera (right) of University of Massachusetts Lowell.
February 2009
Harbor Point Journalism Project
Three aspiring journalists in the Harbor Point Journalism Project visited UMass Boston on Feb. 5, 2009, to check out the New England Ethnic Newswire (www.ethnicnewz.org). The three -- (from left, below) Kashif Brown, seventh grade; Khalid Sherrod, fifth grade; and Sequonie Suarez, 11th grade -- want to produce a newsletter for their neighborhood. The program is funded by a Public Service Grant from UMass Boston.
